The history of jeans

As denim enthusiasts, we felt it was our duty to give you a brief recap of the history of jeans so you can appreciate its heritage and understand why we love this iconic fabric. Today, jeans are a fashion staple: it's impossible to imagine a wardrobe without this timeless basic. Yet, they weren't always worn for their style; quite the opposite.

Its story begins in the 19th century in the United States, when merchant Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis invented a durable pair of trousers for workers. These trousers were made of denim , a very robust, often blue, fabric whose origins can be traced back to the city of Nîmes, France. To make them even more durable, metal rivets were added to the pockets: blue jeans were born.

Originally, jeans were worn by miners, cowboys, and factory workers. But in the 1950s , young people adopted them and made them a true symbol of rebellion, thanks in particular to icons like Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Jeans then became a powerful garment, imbued with attitude and freedom.

In the 70s and 80s , jeans became a staple in everyone's wardrobe. They came in different cuts , colors and styles to suit everyone's personality and body shape: from straight jeans , timeless and easy to wear, to flare jeans with a retro feel, to mom jeans , comfortable and authentic, wide-leg jeans with a wide and trendy leg, or even cigarette jeans , more fitted and decidedly modern.

Far removed from its original workwear origins, jeans continue to evolve with the trends while retaining their core identity. Today, the whole world wears jeans: children, teenagers, women, and men. Practical, comfortable, and stylish, they have become a universal staple . And we have to say, at Oraije , we're certainly not complaining!

The cuts

Flare cut

Straight out of the 60s and 70s, where it was a symbol of hippie and bohemian style, the flare cut is a cut that fits the hips and thighs and flares out from the knees. This cut is greatly appreciated for its structuring effect on the silhouette.

Wide cut

Wide-leg jeans are trousers with a very wide leg; they are fluid and loose from the hip down to create a natural and structured drape. Wide-leg jeans are a must-have for modern, urban, and elegant looks.

Momfit cut

These high-waisted jeans with a straight cut that's slightly loose at the hips, owe their name to the style worn by moms in the 90s. This cut is synonymous with comfort and vintage.

Straight cut

Straight-leg jeans are one of the most timeless denim styles. Originating with Levi Strauss's first jeans for workers, straight-leg jeans have become a wardrobe staple worldwide, evolving into the essential item they are today.

Slim fit

Slim jeans are jeans with a close-fitting cut, distinguished by their sleek and modern style. They were born in the 50s with the icons of that era with their rebellious and sexy look. Slim jeans have become a staple that spans the ages.

Palazzo cut

The palazzo cut is a high-waisted style with very wide legs, offering a straight and flowing drape from top to bottom. After fading into obscurity in favor of more fitted styles like slim-fit jeans, the palazzo is making a major comeback thanks to its ability to flatter all body types.
